Global Big Day 2023 Sets New World Record

Global Big Day is an annual event that takes place on the second Saturday of May. The goal of Global Big Day is to encourage people all over the world to go birdwatching and to record their observations. The data collected from Global Big Day is used to help scientists track bird populations and to identify areas where birds are in need of conservation. Global Big Day was started in 2015 by eBird. In 2022, over 450,000 people from 192 countries participated in Global Big Day, and over 136,000 species of birds were recorded. This year the record was beaten!

The 2023 Global Big Day was a huge success! We saw an increase in the number of participants, countries, and species seen. This year, a new world record was set for the number of species seen on Global Big Day. A total of 141,123 species were recorded, surpassing the previous record of 136,042 species set in 2022.
