Bare-throated Bellbird recorded for the first time in Corrientes, Argentina

Although it has its current distribution in Paraguay and Brazil, the Paranaense rainforest is included within the seasonal and longitudinal movements that this species makes sparsely towards Argentina.

The first record of the Bare-throated Bellbird (Procnias nudicollis) in Corrientes was reported. The bird was detected in spring from it's vocalization, and later it was observed.

The bird remained in the area from early morning until late afternoon, leaving the area the following day. The finding was recently published in the journal "Nuestras Aves", by Alejandro Valentín Franzoy (EcoRegistros) and Jorge La Grottería (Comité Argentino de Registros Ornitológicos).

On 22 October 2022 around 8:30 in the morning a specimen of bellbird was detected from its vocalization in the hull of "Estancia Boquerón", about 20 km north of the town of Santo Tomé, Corrientes. The individual was an adult male and was on a Yvapoy (Ficus luschnathian).

The individual emitted it's typical song from morning to evening hours. They observed and photographed the individual while it was vocalizing and feeding on the fruits.

This species has been classified as Vulnerable Threatened with Extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) because its total population, estimated at between 3,500 and 15,000 individuals, is considered to be in rapid decline due to a combination of habitat loss from increased deforestation rates and capture for the illegal cage bird trade.
