GLOBAL BIG DAY: The largest birding event

Global Big Day (GBD) is a day in which people around the world collectively record the largest possible number of bird species in a country. You do not compete with anyone for global sighting, however, in each country, it is about seeing as many species of birds as possible.

This year, the Global Big Day was lived again in an atypical way. After this world birdwatching event was held in 2020 in the midst of a global quarantine due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the recent version of the GBD came when the planet is still facing the coronavirus, but also gained relevance in Colombia in the midst of the wave of violence that is being experienced in the country.

The results of what was this world event were announced on Thursday, May 13 and according to the e-bird - the GBD portal - this time a new record was set in the number of participants. There were 51,816 people in 192 countries who recorded 7,234 species of birds in a single day.

This time the first place, in terms of number of species sighted, was occupied by Peru with 1,351 records, after four consecutive years in second place. Colombia conquered the second place with 1,190 records, after four years of leading this ranking. The top five is completed with Ecuador (1,114), Brazil (985) and Bolivia (889).

In the list of the first ten places are also Mexico, in seventh place, with 772 records; Venezuela with 756 species of birds ranked eight; and Argentina with 750 records in ninth place. In total, eight Latin American countries are part of the top 10 of the Global Big Day 2021.

After last year a Global Big Day was experienced from homes observing birds through windows, in balconies, gardens and parks, this time photographs of people with binoculars and masks have been seen all over the world.
