Millions of birds on the move as Spring migration returns

Spring season has returned and birds are leaving their Winter homes to migrate up north.

April 25, 2022

The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) is tracking this big weekend for bird migration.

BirdCast is predicting over 200 million birds to migrate over the Central and Eastern United States this weekend.

The height of the migration surge will be Saturday night with 273 million birds predicted to be passing through.

It's that time of year again! Migrating birds are leaving their non-breeding/wintering grounds and heading north again. BirdCast is predicting over 200 MILLION birds migrating over the Central and Eastern United States for the next three nights (Friday, April 22nd to Sunday April 24th). The height of this migration surge will be Saturday night with 273 MILLION birds predicted to be passing through!!!

These birds are coming from the Caribbean, Central America, and South America crossing the Gulf of Mexico or over Mexico. This is an exhausting trip for them so we are here to provide tips on how you can support these migrating birds!

1. Birds use the stars and moon to navigate their journey so please turn off nonessential indoor and outdoor lights or close your blinds once the sun begins to set. Our household lights can disorient birds and throw them off course.

2. Now is a great time to clean your feeders and bird baths to welcome these songbirds to your yard for a pit stop and some extra energy for their journey.

3. If a bird hits your window or building, please call your nearest wildlife rehab center and explain the situation so they can direct you based on your specific scenario! 4. This is a good time to relax and refrain from any yard work. These birds migrating through may need a place to rest and activities like tree trimming could create additional challenges for these birds.
