February 2, 2022

Every year, on February 2, citizens, social organizations and official bodies from around the world join in commemorating World Wetlands Day. The date calls for rethinking and making society aware of the benefits offered by these ecosystems, especially in the face of the threats of climate change.

Why is World Wetlands Day celebrated?

It has been celebrated since 1977 in commemoration of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands, finalized in the city of Ramsar, Iran, on February 2, 1971. The multilateral agreement was signed to promote the conservation of these ecosystems and among the foundations this day to frame the international importance in the care of the habitat of waterfowl, promote the conservation and rational use of wetlands through local, regional, national and international actions.

Wetlands play an elementary role for humanity, since this type of ecosystem made up of animals, plants, and microorganisms, have the ability to regulate the water cycle. The conservation of these spaces has led to the development of an important cultural heritage around wetlands in many regions of the world.

Wetlands, in addition to being an important source of water resources, play important roles in mitigating the effects of climate change by being carbon stores or sinks (whose release into the atmosphere, when they are not retained by wetlands, enhance the greenhouse effect, which is the cause of global warming).
