Global Big Day: October 2021

Global Big Day: October 2021

The most anticipated day during the southern spring.

October 25, 2021

We left the Friday 8th of October headed north anxious to get to know the region known as Chaco Humedo. This region is forestlike and not well known. that day was really hard because we had to drive for about 850 kilometers. luckily it was a cloudy day but not rainy so we didn’t have to withstand the characteristic intense heat or rain.

We made it to our hotel around 10 PM and the Big Day counting started at 3 AM so we didn’t have much time to rest! When we woke up the real adventure started. in the town square, we got our first species that were a House Sparrow and a Creamy-bellied Thrush.

Later on, we drove through a dirt road that would take us to the Experimental Senderos Reserve, and we made some birding during the ride; we got to see some species like the Rufous Nightjar, Little Nightjar, and Common Potoo, we also saw a Crab-eating Raccoon. we were expecting to get some owls but we couldn’t see any.

At almost 6 am we got to the reserve and made a brief walk around the woods before having breakfast. We saw that some Azara's Night Monkey and Bare-faced Curassow was uploaded to the E-bird page and close to where we were but we didn’t get lucky enough to see them.

We went back to the lodge for some mates so we could recharge energy to get the largest road or the reserve done. there we registered 49 species, being the rarest ones the  Undulated Tinamou, Toco Toucan, Little Woodpecker, Planalto Woodcreeper, and Straneck's Tyrannulet.

At midday, the park ranger was waiting for us with a spectacular and delicious Asado and some argentine wine.

For the afternoon walk, we changed sites and went to the Bermejo River, which is the river that divides Chaco and Formosa. In this place, we registered a ton of new species. the better ones for me, were Brushland Tinamou, Sick's Swift, Lark-like Brushrunner, Suiriri Flycatcher, Yellowish Pipit and, Large Elaenia.

As the last stop, we went to a lagoon looking for some aquatic species; there we found a Black-collared Hawk, a Least Grebe, a Scarlet-headed Blackbird and, a Rufescent Tiger-Heron.

Our day ended at 6 pm and we were very happy with the tour we made, the walks, the weather, all the species we got to see and the good time with friends. in total, we registered 125 species and 23 lists that are all uploaded to Ebird. In conclusion, this day was a total success!
